Contribution rules under the Municipal Elections Act
Only individuals who are normally resident in Ontario may contribute to a municipal candidate’s campaign. Corporations, businesses, and trade unions cannot donate.
The maximum a single contributor can give to one candidate is $1,200. The total a person can contribute across multiple candidates in the same election is $5,000.
Contributions over $25 must be made by a method that clearly identifies the contributor, such as e-transfer. Anonymous contributions are not permitted. Your name and address will be recorded and reported publicly in the campaign financial statement.
You must contribute your own money. Donations made on behalf of someone else, a group, a business, or an organization are not permitted.
A donation receipt will be issued for every contribution. Municipal campaign donations are not tax deductible.
